The purpose of the dissertation is to focus on the macroeconomic debate about the need for microeconomic foundations in order to provide answers on the effectiveness of economic policy, especially in times of major economic crises (e.g. the 2008 recession and the Eurozone debt crisis) where conditions of high uncertainty prevail and the attitudes of society cannot be characterized by full rationality. The financial crisis of 2008 has brought the focus of research into the importance of expectations in the implementation of economic policy. At the same time, questions arise as to the factors that determine the expectations of the economic actors as well as how they are integrated into macroeconomic models. However, this debate is not recent but has been at the heart of economic thinking since the early 1970s. In the wake of the recent financial crisis (2008), the prevailing question concerns the failure of economists to predict it. Many economists argue that this is not feasible as we live in an ever-changing world. Although the role of expectations in macroeconomic models has been perceived, however, there is a strong disagreement about how they are formed and how they are modeled. For the microfoundation the dissertation uses variables that express expectations, uncertainty and loss aversion. For loss aversion, a relevant indicator will be constructed that incorporates behavioral factors of economic actors. At the same time, for the particular characteristics of societies, the concept of cultural background will be used which incorporates attitudes of the society. The above variables will be used in a New Keynesian macroeconomic model to describe the process of economic growth. Finally, the dissertation focuses on whether changes in the growth model can arise from differentiation in loss aversion and change in expectations. The conclusions could provide appropriate policy implications in the short and long term. In this way the present thesis aims to contribute to the literature about the need for the microeconomic foundation of macroeconomic theory by quantifying the magnitude and dynamics of microeconomic impacts on economic policy effectiveness through a New Keynesian type of macroeconomic growth model. |
