This doctoral study examines the relationship between human capital and social identity through occupational choice. The occupational map of the economy is a proxy for the production structure; thus, this doctoral study eventually analyzes the relationship between human capital and social identity with the production structure. Eventually, the contribution of this doctoral thesis extends to clarify the relationship between social identity, human capital, and growth requirements. The point of departure is the division of human capital according to its qualitative characteristics, namely; (a) knowledge, (b) skills, (c) abilities, and (d) working activities. By determining a Human Capital Complexity Index (HCCI), the analysis will proceed in terms of social identity theory to set a behavioral framework for the HCCI. It is important to note that the HCCI will be an original contribution, with the aspiration to set new rules and norms to investigate the relationship between human capital and growth. The examination of the working hypothesis of the relationship between human capital and social identity occurs under conditions of rapid technological change. Technological change alters the nature and requirements of current and future job positions. These circumstances allow for a case study on how employed individuals perceive the risk of technological change such as automation. In that respect, this doctoral thesis aspires to contribute to understanding the relationship between human capital, social identity, and occupational choice -which are reflected in the production structure and growth requirements.
