| It has been amply demonstrated that people do not always behave rationally, yet most of public policy is built on the assumption that they do. This causes a series of distortions. More specifically, while corporates would rationally be expected to grow, many do not. This cohort is more pervasive in Greece, partly as a result of skewed incentives in the economy, but not only. We propose to examine the role that behavioural traits have as a dampener to growth in the owner-manager cohort. Further, investment managers and clients alike consider the application of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) criteria important as has been demonstrated by the large shifts in the investment industry in that direction. However, while it would not appear rational to engage in divisible scoring as that would give rise to ambiguity, there is a growing trend to do so. We examine the traits involved in this seemingly complacent approach. Finally, we consider whether alleviating the behavioural traits examined in small corporates in combination with the irrationality of negative screening presents an opportunity for value creation in the guise of a private equity fund that would steer companies towards compliance with ESG criteria as well as towards public markets. | ||
